21st June - 27th June (6 nights)
From: Autherley Junction (Staffs & Worcs canal)
To: Nantwich (Shropshire Union canal)
HIGHLIGHTS: Grub Street Cutting
Knighton Wharf (Cadburys)
Autherley Junction to Nantwich £720 pp
We'll have spent a couple of days moored up and once our guests join us in the afternoon we'll chug off.
Having turned right at Autherley Junction on to the Shropshire Union Canal, where the countryside opens up once more, we pass Belvid reservoir – crossing over the Watling Street A5 roman road via Stretton Aqueduct and before long we’ll moor up in Wheaton Aston for the evening. On leaving Wheaton Aston we transverse a very long pound of cuttings/embankments and encounter Cowley tunnel (81 yards – that will please the skipper) and moor for the evening
Next morning, we go through shelmore embankment towards Norbury Junction ( where the Newport branch used to lock down from the mainline) and heading onwards we come across High Bridge (a double culvert bridge) and through open countryside for a while. Market Drayton is our next planned stop and by then we’ll have passed the old Cadbury Wharf.
On leaving Market Drayton the canal is peaceful and scenic, through pleasant wood cuttings before we arrive at Adderley Locks (5 of them) shortly followed by the 15 locks at Audlem – it’s a 90ft descent through the locks which should take us a couple of hours to complete… after which, we can walk back to a nice pub before we retire for the evening… that is unless we stop half way up as our final day is relatively short.
Depending on where we moored, the following morning we chug onwards, passing the famous SECRET NUCLEAR bunker (signposted) near Hack Green Locks end our cruise just before Nantwich Aqueduct for our guests to depart after breakfast on our final morning.
