30th September to 6th October 2020 (6nights)
From: Nantwich (Shropshire Union
To: Penkridge (Staffs & Worcs)
Grub Street Cutting,
Hopefully we've have spent a nice couple of days in Nantwich since our previous guests departed clean and prep the boat so we'll be ready to depart when our new visitors arrive after lunch.
We'll chug on a while but rather than begin the Audlem flight of locks on our first afternoon, we'll moor up on the outskirts around Moss Hall bridge which will give an opportunity to explore on foot – perhaps time to visit the 15th Century Church and appreciate the pretty surroundings.
Next morning, once we've had our breakfast, we'll cast off and begin to work our way through the Audlem flight.
After Audlem, comes Adderley Locks and once we're through them, it's a peaceful chug on as far as Market Drayton where we'll probably tie up for the day.
On leaving Market Drayton the following morning, we've another 5 locks to work through at Tyrley before we pass through Woodseaves cutting which is followed by Shebdon embankment and Grubstreet cutting (with the famous high bridge). Gnosal will be our mooring point for today – just before we approach Cowley Tunnel.
After breakfast we'll pass through the tunnel and on though rural areas with only a single lock at Wheaton Aston ,before Stretton Aqueduct (crossing over Watling Street A5 – Roman Road) and we'll moor for the day around Brewood.
Our route is now becoming a little more urban as we head towards Autherley Junction. Here we'll turn sharp left to join the Staffs and Worcestershire canal. Once on the Staffs, the route once again becomes more rural and enjoys plenty of twist and turns...along with a few locks to punctuate the route. We're never too far away from the M6 motorway but hopefully our journey will be far more pleasurable than the poor folks using the road!
Our cruise terminates in Penkridge and our guests depart after breakfast the following morning.
