Wakefield to Leeds and Return (2 nights in Leeds centre)
Now that we’re back on home ground, we plan to have a few shorter… taster cruises to Leeds and back (or vice-versa if preferred).
With that in mind, we’re going to Start out at Wakefield visitor moorings around midday on day one (a stone’s throw from Kirkgate Station) and head on to the river Calder at Fall Ing lock before joining the Aire and Calder Navigation proper at Stanley Ferry.
We’ll chug over the new aqueduct (to get a proper view of the old one) and then carry on downstream on the Calder to Castleford Junction where we’ll turn left to join the River Aire and head upstream.
We’ll leave the river at Lemonroyd (through the massive automated lock) and aim to moor for the first evening around Woodlesford - OR if our guests would prefer, we could chug on to the visitor moorings at Thwaite Mills Industrial Museum, to facilitate a quick visit the next morning.
After breakfast and/or a look around the Museum, we’ll cast off and pass through Knostrop lock (and the new weir) before heading back on to the River Aire and into Leeds. Depending on whether there is space, we’ll moor for the night at Clarence Dock (right next to the famous armouries museum) or (as is most likely from past experience) continue up the River through central Leeds and moor at Granary Wharf… a bustling area with numerous bars and restaurants – a great place to people watch with a drink .
If we've tagged on an extra nights stop in Leeds, our return journey needs to commence about 9.00am on Monday morning in order to get back to Wakefield around tea time. Alternatively, if we've just stayed the one night in Leeds, we can have our final night stopover on-route back – perhaps on our home mooring at the Stanley Ferry with tea (dinner if you're posh) in the pub.
The run back to Wakefield centre (visitor moorings) takes about an hour the next morning..
