Llangollen to Nantwich
17th - 24th May 2019 (7nights)
From: Llangollen (Llangollen Canal)
To: Nantwich (Shropshire Union
VIA: The Montgomery Canal
HIGHLIGHTS: Hurleston Junction,
Hopefully we’ll have been able to spend a few days moored in Llangollen – if not, we’ll have chugged back towards Chirk and will then make the return Journey to Llangollen to pick up our new guests on the 17th. Once our guests have joined us, we’ll begin our journey turning right at the basin and over the Pontycysyllte Aqueduct towards Chirk, passing through Whitehouse Tunnel (191 yards) and Chirk Tunnel (459yards) we’re back in peaceful countryside. After the 2 locks at New Marton we arrive at Frankton Junction and will probably moor here for the night.
We’ll turn right here on to the Montgomery Canal, passing through 4 locks – the 1st pair being a staircase, followed by 2 single ones. We’ll then pass the disused western branch before we arrive at Graham Palmer Lock and then continuing though open countryside – over Perry Aqueduct. A few locks are ahead and we’ll then stop at Maesbury Marsh. We’ll probably stop here for a couple of nights so we can explore (on foot) the currently un-navigable parts of the Montgomery that lay ahead… hoping that one day, we’ll be able to do so on the boat.
After our stay here, we’ll turn (wind) the boat and retrace our steps towards Aston and then Lower Frankton, turning right and back on to the Llangollen canal and on 2 Ellesmere where we’ll spend a couple of nights.
On Leaving Ellesmere, we’ll make our way through Ellesmere Tunnel (87 yards) – passing Blake Mere, then Cole Mere we head to the Prees Branch which we’ll chug up to explore and hopefully spend the night in the basin if there’s room.
Retracing our detour and back on to the Llangollen Canal, we‘ll chug leisurely onwards to Whitchurch and moor there in order to explore.
Leaving Whitchurch the following morning, we’ll head to Grindley Brook locks (6 - 1st 3 being a staircase) and once more in rural surroundings with just the occasional lock of lift bridge to negotiate, before the Hurleston locks (4 of them) we leave the Llangollen and turn right back on to the Shropshire Union and make our way to Nantwich for our final evening before our guests depart tomorrow.
