Stretford to Cherry Tree £695 pp
We’ll have spent a couple of days in Stretford to celebrate the Skipper’s birthday (NB – Gin a favourite tipple) before our next guests join us. From here we’ll head for Waters meeting where we might stop for a walk down to Manchester United’s football ground or carry on through Trafford Park arriving at the Manchester Ship Canal crossing via the impressive Barton Swing Aqueduct. We’ll stop here for our first evening. We could linger a while if desired to visit the Trafford shopping centre. It’s quite a built up area but nothing special as we continue the next day towards Worsley before we pass under the M60 Motorway with visible signs of it’s mining heritage. Approaching Astley Green, we may stop for a visit to the Pit Museum. Pleasant country views accompany us through Leigh over a small aqueduct and a swing bridge. We’re now on the Leigh Branch of the Leeds & Liverpool canal and we head onwards towards Wigan… but we’ll moor for the evening to give us plenty of time (and energy) the following morning to tackle the Wigan 21 locks.
After a (hopefully) not too tiring lock passage, we’ll moor in the New Springs area for the evening. Next day, we’ll be more aware of how far we’ve climbed as we survey the views beneath us. We’ll travel 9 miles before we encounter our first lock (known as the Lancaster Pool) and then moor around Chorley for the evening. Leaving Chorley we encounter 7 locks close together – the middle lock being an old toll house with scenic views. Once at the top lock , we’ll be 350ft above sea-level.
Staying at this height we travel through often wooded landscapes as we head towards the old pepper mills at Withnel Fold. There’s a nature reserve in the old filter beds and sludge lagoons. We pass under the M65 Motorway, the canal through a heavily wooded section before we arrive in Cherry Tree for our guests to depart.
