We'll begin our cruise from Barnsley road visitor moorings in Wakefield - opposite the Ruddy Duck pub... a 10-15 minute walk from both Westgate/Kirkgate train stations or Wakefield Central Bus Station. Depending on your arrival time, we can overnight here or begin the journey with a brief spell on the River Calder down to Stanley Ferry where we might moor for a while and take a look at the Aqueduct from the road. Continuing on, we'll head to Castleford Junction where the Calder and Aire meet turning left, up the Aire with the plan to overnight at either Lemonyroyd OR Woodlesford (off the river). Leeds will be our next stop - Either at Clarence dock if there is space, or Granary Wharf. If we've NOT over-nighted in Wakefield on the 1st night, we might be able to spend 2 nights in Leeds centre to allow time to visit the Royal Armouries Museum, sight see or sit and people watch. We'll leave Leeds quite early (circa 8am) and begin our journey on the broad locked Leeds & Liverpool. It's a lovely trip out of Leeds towards Kirkstall Brewery with a couple of sets of staircases before we arrive in Rodley with its renowned Nature reserve, where we'll moor for the night. After a leisurely start, we'll head out towards pretty Calverley and Airedale before mooring early afternoon in Apperley Bridge. Depending on how early we start the next day, we might stop off in Saltaire for a couple of hours before heading onwards towards the Famous Bingley 3 and 5 rise staircases.
The journey from Leeds onwards becomes quite physically challenging, with frequent swing bridges (mostly manually operated) and heavy broad locks. Don't worry though, you'll not be expected to do all the hard work - you're welcome to of course but we're quite used to them. We've chosen to offer this route as it's a lovely journey that many are put off making BECAUSE of the effort involved. We think it's worth it.
Once we're at the top of the 5 rise on the 17th April it will be the end of this trip and you'll be able to take a train back home or continue your travels independently... we'll be turning around, heading back down and having a few days off to prepare the boat before picking up our next travelling companions at either Saltaire or Shipely. This way, they too can have the opportunity to ascend the staircase as we continue our journey westwards for the next part of the trip to Liverpool..
